History

Elmwood Presbyterian Church commenced its christian witness in the Ballymacash area of Lisburn in September 1976 under its new minister, Rev Robert Lockhart(who remained with congregation until he recently retired at the end of April 2003. A few months later (November 1976) the 5th Lisburn Boys’ Brigade Company was started by the John Irwin, Captain of nearby 1st Lisburn BB, and Rosemary Maxwell, a member of the new congregation.

From a few Boys in Junior Section, the new Company quickly grew, and within a short time the Company expanded to include Anchor Boys and a Company Section. In the late 1980’s a feeder group called Cabin Boys were added, and the Company has now grown to be one of the biggest in the Belfast Battalion, with almost 150 Boys and Officers.

During its existence there have been 4 Captains – the John Irwin, Tom Ward, Bob Owen, and Peter McKechnie – but the real strength of the Company has been in the quality and commitment of its Officers.

Many of our Boys have progressed right through the Company, and over 30 have been awarded the Queens Badge. There are increasing numbers each year progressing to Duke of Edinburgh Award at Bronze, Silver and Gold level.

The 25th Anniversary Year started with an Old Boys Reunion Dinner, the Company Enrolment Service, and a party for the Boys, and concluded in March 2002 with an excellent Display.

In April 2003, we said farewell to our Minister and Chaplain Rev. Bob Lockhart.

In June 2004, we welcomed our new Chaplain, Reverend Andrew Thompson, wife Donna, and son Ben(who immediately joined our Cabin Boys). Recruitment from the Manse has continued - baby Nathan was born in June 2005.

We look forward to the future as we adapt to the challenges of an ever-changing environment, whilst remaining steadfast to the Christian principles of such a great and unique organisation as the Boys’ Brigade, as we strive to advance Christ’s Kingdom amongst the Boys of Ballymacash.

Drumming skills – we have drums and drum pads lying idle, and would love to have someone coach some of our Company Section Boys, maybe for 30 minutes or so on a number of Tuesday nights during the year. If anyone can help, please contact our Captain, Peter McKechnie on
